1 Dead and Over 600 Families Lose Homes in 3 Metro Fires
With burning houses all around them firemen fought the flames with their hoses in Pasig City at around midnight of Mar. 22, 2014. 3 large fires hit Metro Manila over the weekend killing 1 resident and leaving at least 650 families homeless. The spate of fires occured heading into the 4th week of March which is traditionally observed as Fire Prevention Month. On Saturday afternoon a fire broke out in Caloocan City killing a 26 yr. old worker and destroying the homes of some 300 families. Hours later, another fire struck Pasig City rendering some 100 families homeless. Yesterday morning a 3rd fire hit Tondo, Manila destroying some Php 5 Million worth of property and leaving at least 250 families homeless. Residents were roused from their sleep when flames and smoke started to surround their street. Firefighters were able to immediately respond to the scene and put the fire out at around 6:30 am. Because the area was near the port the firefighting operations and the panicking residents caused a huge traffic jam along R-10 and at the Del Pan bridge. Those displaced by the fire sought temporary shelter at the barangay hall and at the nearby covered court. Hours earlier a fire hit a residential area in Brgy. Malinao, Pasig City at 11:45 pm on Saturday. During it's peak the fire reached the 4th alarm the highest ever in several years to hit Pasig City. Most of the houses were made of light materials making it difficult for firefighters to keep the flames from spreading. In the Caloocan City fire the lone fatality was identified as Jayson Dado of Brgy. 86, Kalaanan Compound. Household members allegedly tried to wake him but failed.
