Pilipinos Winter Games Spurred to Go for Gold
Fireworks over the Olympic Cauldron signal the start of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia on Feb. 7, 2014. Even without snow in the country, Malacanang expressed optimism yesterday that Pilipinos competing for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia will be able to bring home the bacon with their innate talent and skills. The Philippines lone bet 17 yr. old Michael Christian Martinez will be competing for figure skating Martinez is the 1st athlete to represent the Philippines and South East Asia in Olympic Figure Skating. This is the 4th time a home grown Pilipino qualified for the Winter Olympics. Aside from Martinez 2 other athletes with Pilipino descent will also be competing, Pilipino-Polish American JR Celski and Pilipino-Canadian Gilmore Junio, in short-track and long track speed skating respectively. Lacierda said not having snow in the country doesn't deter Pilipinos from aiming for the gold in the Winter Olympics. Lacierda said Pilipinos should support Pilipinos who are competing for the Winter Olympics especially for Martinez who is the country's lone bet for the said competition.
