MRT and PNR Extending Operating Hours
Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) will extend operations hours to accommodate more commuters seeking to avoid traffic congestion due to simultaneous road construction projects in Metro Manila. This weekend alone, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned the public against heavier traffic along EDSA due to road repairs. In it's advisory the MMDA said the Dept. of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will undertake road reblocking and repairs on the following sections along EDSA between Boni Ave. and Guadalupe Bridge (Southbound), Mandaluyong City; between Guadalupe Bridge and South Drive (Southbound 5th lane), Makati City and between Don Ang St. and Gen. Tinio St. (Northbound lane 5) Caloocan City. To give way for the road works affected lanes will be closed to vehicular traffic from 10 pm of Feb. 21, 2014 Friday until 5 am of Feb. 24, 2014 (Monday). All roads will be fully passable by Monday morning. Dept. of Transportation and Communication Spokesman Sagcal said the MRT 3 will dry run it's extended operating schedule in the next 4 weeks. Sagcal said the extended operating schedule for MRT 3 is only temporarily while government is studying various ways to cushion the effect of simultaneous road works on the traffic situation in the city. The extended operation hours of MRT 3 is seen to diffuse passenger overcrowding especially during rush hour. The MRT line has 540,000 passenger capacity but actually ferries an average of 560,000 daily.
