Metro Traffic Solutions Tackled in Summit
Everyday especially on Friday traffic flow to Quiapo all the way to flyover leading to Manila City Hall crawls given given the heavy volume of vehicles on the road. Days before the start of the work on the first 2 major road infrastructure projects in Metro Manila last week, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) organized "Metro Manila Traffic Summit 2". Attended by the representatives from concerned government agencies, contractors, academe, transport groups and other stakeholders, the forum came up with several solutions to reduce the projected traffic congestion. The 2 huge infrastructure projects are the Metro Manila Skyway Project 3 along the Osmena Highway in Makati City and the Ninoy Aquino International (NAIA) Expressway II along Macapagal Blvd. in Pasay City. The work closed several lanes. One of the solutions that were presented by the MMDA is the launching of www.mmdaroadway.com, a website featuring the progress of construction, traffic issues, alternate routes and contact person in case of emergencies. Among the suggestions made were better use of alternate modes of transport like MRT and LRT the Pasig River ferry system, carpooling and bicycles. Others proposed new work or business schedules likea 4 day work or school week, chenges in lifestyle and adjustments in schedules like flexible work hours. On top of the government efforts, addressing the traffic problems in the metro requires cooperation of the public. In the long run the said projects will benefit the public with the additional kilometers of road.
