The Gilas Pilipinas Coach and Sports 5 Head Vincent 'Chot' Reyes
After almost 40 long years, Philippine National Basketball will once again participate in FIBA World Cup to be held in Spain within August this year. Last year Gilas Pilipinas finished 2nd Place in the FIBA Asian Championship, held here securing them a spot in the world championships. The last time the national team reached the world championships round was in 1978. At the helm of the Philippine team is none other than coach Vincent 'Chot' Reyes. The feat was indeed a sweet victory and a fitting reward for all the challenges that the 5 time Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) "Coach of the Year" and his team have undergone since he started coaching them in 2005. He also led the team to win the William Jones Cup championship in 2012. However despite the recent success, Gilas Pilipinas is facing a challenge. Their training is put on hold due to the current season of the PBA. The players are currently playing for their mother teams until the final conference, the Governors Cup which will end in August just 2 weeks before the World Cup begins. Their preparation is crucial to the performance of the team who are going up against world powerhouses in basketball like Team USA in the international tournament. Aside from coaching the national team, Reyes has still a lot on his plate. As head of Sports 5, the sports division of television network TV5, he's bent on giving due exposure to the various other sports in the country, aside from basketball and at the same time contribute to the revenue generating initiatives of the network. One of it's upcoming programs is the "Road to Spain" series a production about Gilas Pilipinas journey to the World Cup. Reyes is also the exec. dir. of the Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP) Sports Foundation Inc. which aims to develop sports in the country on the grassroots level and carry out elite programs for the athletes.
