PNoy Still Doubtful of Charter Change But Won't Stop His Allies From Doing So
Pres. Aquino is still reluctant to Charter Change but will not hold his allies in House of Representatives from proceeding and pursuing such amendments on this year. Deputy Pres. Spokeswoman Valte said lawmakers have the prerogative to pursue their advocacies, including introducing changes to 1987 constitution. Valte however emphasized that Charter Change remains the furthest thing from the President's mind at the present. Valte also shrugged off concerns that amending the Constitution is needed to help boost the growth of the local economy. House Speaker Belmonte Jr. earlier announced plans to rush for amendments to the economic provisions of the Constitution this year particularly lifting foreign ownership restrictions. Belmonte reportedly hopes that his colleagues will support the Charter Change resolution by the 1st Quarter of 2014.
