Former Batangas Gov. Antonio Leviste Granted by Government with Parole
The former Batangas Gov. Leviste shows his release documents outside the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, yesterday after he was granted parole. Leviste was convicted by a Makati court in 2009 for killing his long time aide Rafael de las Alas. Leviste was officially released at 11:20 am Friday according to New Bilibid Prison Supt. Tesoro after the Board of Pardon and Parole approved his application on Nov. 19 along with 34 other prisoner-applicants. Teroso said that the ex-governor was supposed to be discharged on Thursday after he had completed his papers but the ex-governor "begged" off and requested he be allowed to leave Friday when his family was available to pick him up. Justice Sec. De Lima confirmed Leviste has met all the requirements to be entitled for parole. During an investigation by Justice Dept. and NBI officials, Leviste admitted he went out of NBP without permission but said he thought he was entitled to it adding "I had illusion I was entitled to it. I did it on my own. I shouldn't have done it. I won't do it again."
