Philippines-New Birth Place of Andres Bonifacio is at Masantol, Pampanga
Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan, continues to be controversial. As the nation marks the 150th Birth Anniversary of the hero, the oft-repeated issue on Bonifacio being our National Hero and not Rizal and a new theory that his birth place is Masantol and not Tondo stokes the discussions. The new theory represented by the historians says that Bonifacio was born in Masantol, Pampanga. It is widely believed and stated in history books that Bonifacio was born in Manila. Presenting this theory Tuesday is historian Jose Regala from the Center of Kapampangan Studies of the Holy Angel University in Angeles City. He said Bonifacio originated in Masantol and not in Tondo, Manila. The House Bill 3431 is authored by Rep. Colmenares and Rep. Zarate. They sought to put an end to the debate, saying the country urgently needs a national symbol "that would represent patriotism, nationalism and the resolve to fight against any foreign intervention and control."
