Philippines-BIR Defends the Tax Case of Rep. Pacquiao
The Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Jacinto Henares yesterday vehemently denied charges that the government is harassing Sarangani Rep. Pacquiao for garnishing Php 1.1 Million of his bank deposits. "We are just implementing the law and we don't consider the status of a person whether he is popular, rich or poor in applying the law equally for everyone, If we treat Pacquiao differently we are violating our duty." She said. The CTA meanwhile said that it was the BIR that issued the freeze order and not its 1st Division, saying it is still deliberating on the petition of Pacquiao who sought a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against WG. It is not the duty of the BIR to get such information from the US Tax service unless taxpayer is suspected of tax evasion. In a statement released also yesterday Arum said Pacquiao who turns 35 on Dec. 17 can't be taxed in the Philippines if his fights and endorsements occurred on US soil. "He's not required to pay double taxes."
