8 filipinos were trampled to death for a plate of rice ...said Rex Estoperez , spokesman of the National Food Authority

Eight victims of the deadly hurricane Chaigian trampled to death in their efforts to loot government rice warehouse . Died when a wall of the warehouse collapsed in the city Alangkalan province of Leyte , said Rex Estoperez , spokesman of the National Food Authority.
"It's very unfortunate. Appeal to those who stole the supplies to share with people who need them and not sell them ," he said by telephone .
He said that the warehouse stolen 33,000 sacks of white rice and 96,000 with raw ( brown ) rice. Each bag contained 50 kg of rice and the cost of the loss is estimated at nearly 22 million.
At the same time , the President of the Philippines Benigno Akouino said that the death toll is much lower than that estimated local officials namely expected to reach the 2000 to 2500 and not 10,000 as reported by the local authorities.
The official report speaks of 1,833 dead , according to today's announcement of the national disaster agency , but counting is not done in many cities yet. At least 2,623 people were injured by Hurricane from the Philippines Friday , according to the service .
