The European Maritime Safety Committee , EMSA is not excluded prohibit manning European ships with Filipino seafarers .
Such a decision would be taken after completion of the investigations by EMSA to maritime schools in the Philippines and if they accept that a number of them have been adapted to the requirements for level of education set by EMSA.
Checks by EMSA expected in the period 18-22 March , says Philippine newspaper .
The Philippine authorities had promised to bring their schools to the demands posed by EMSA. Those that do not will get shut down. Noted that in 2011 the European Commission had signaled that it would forbid manning European ships with Filipino seafarers but the threat did not materialize after intervention by the Philippine government which proceeded to the adoption of the STCW Convention
Noted that 350,000 Filipino seafarers manning ships around the world contributed nearly $ 4.3 billion in the country's economy through remittances and a possible ban will affect approximately 80,000 Filipino sailors in Greece
