Philippines-Kidnap victim to return home soon

Malaysian Counter-Terrorism officials are waiting for the return of escaped kidnap victim Chong Wei Jie in order to get a clearer picture of his ordeal.

Chong is said to be resting in the Philippines before he is debriefed by police there and is expected to return home in a few days’ time.

Special Task Force (Operations and Counter Terrorism) director Comm Datuk Mohamad Fuzi Harun said they were waiting for Chong to return to talk to him about his ordeal.

“We should get a clearer picture of what happened and who his captors were after we talk to him.

“We have been told that his cousin, Chong Wei Fei, 33, died of illness some time ago and are working with our counterparts in the Philippines to verify this,” he said yesterday.

Comm Fuzi said Wei Jie’s family was anxious to see him and had expressed interest to go to the Phillipines to get him.

“We have advised his family to stay here and allow us to work together with Wisma Putra to get his documents in order so that he can fly back to Malaysia as soon as possible,” he said.

He added that police in the Philippines were expected to furnish his department with a report on the abduction after the Hari Raya holidays.

Wei Jie and Wei Fei, who were originally from Negri Sembilan, were abducted by Filipino gunmen on Nov 13 last year at the family’s bird’s nest farmhouse in Lahad Datu, Sabah, and taken to Jolo in southern Philippines.

Wei Jie also told police that Wei Fei died of an illness on April 8 while in captivity.

He said he saw his cousin’s body shaking and he then stopped breathing.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that a policeman saw Wei Jie walking on the highway in Pasil around 7am on Tuesday and asked if he needed help.
